We have cut down on the Prednisolone to one time a day now. We are giving it to him in the mornings with his Allegra. He usually takes it with breakfast to avoid an upset stomach. Then he takes his Xopenex and Pulmicort treatments. Yesterday(Monday) his preschool teacher said he hasn’t been emotional just very loud. Today, however, was a different story. We brought my 1 year old to the doctor and as we were leaving Caleb through a tantrum. He has never done that before. When we got home I was able to calm him down. I really don’t like how this medicine is effecting his emotions, but it is relieving him of his cough.

Living With Childhood Asthma

This is my very first blog and I wanted to track my son’s asthma and hopefully help other parents in the process.  Caleb is a 3 1/2 year old energetic boy.  He started his first nebulizer treatment when he was 4 months and was officially diagnosed with asthma when he was 2 1/2.  We visited an Allergy/Asthma doctor and found out that he is allergic to pet dander, mold and dust mites.  Of course the first thing we did was clean and dust mite proof the house, paying close attention to his bedroom.  I visited a website called National Allergy and purchased the following to protect my son from the little bugs that “lurk” about in his room:

This helped him breath a lot better.  He also started the following medicines

At the time he was diagnosed he could not stop coughing so we had to give him Prednisolone, an oral steroid.  This helped clear things up for a while. We were able to take him off most of the meds.  However, he started having nightmares, leg cramps, sensitivity to light and crazy mood swings.  The singular seemed to be causing this so we took him off of it.  He did have a few withdrawal symptoms but once it was out of his system he was like a new child.

About two weeks ago he started having coughing attacks again that were out of control.  He caught a cold as well.  The Xopenex and Pulmicort weren’t clearing things up so off to the doctor we went.  For the past seven days he has been on the following:

  • Xopenx – 3 times a day
  • Pulmicort – 2 times a day
  • Prednisolone – 1 tsp 2 x daily
  • Allegra – 1 tsp 2 x daily
  • Xclear – At least 3 x daily (this is just a nose moisturizing spray you can find at the health food store)

Tomorrow he will start taking the Prednisolone 1tsp 1 x daily for 7 days.

He is very emotional and aggressive but the meds. are helping his cough.
